Why ingredients matter for Malassezia
Malassezia yeast lacks the enzymes needed to synthesise certain fatty acids on its own, so it depends on external sources -- your skin's sebum, sweat, and the products you apply. It particularly thrives on medium-chain fatty acids with carbon chain lengths between C11 and C24. Many skincare products contain these fatty acids as emollients, base oils, or fermentation by-products.
This is not about the product being "good" or "bad" overall -- a beautifully formulated oil or rich moisturiser can be excellent for most people and still problematic for someone with active Malassezia folliculitis. The relevant question is whether a product's ingredients include the fatty acids that feed follicle yeast overgrowth.
Much of what is known about Malassezia and fatty acids comes from dermatological and biochemical research on the organism's lipid metabolism. The practical ingredient lists used in the skincare community are largely derived from this research, plus community observation. Where clinical evidence for specific product reactions is limited, that is noted below. The absence of a clinical trial does not make the biochemical reasoning wrong, but it does mean individual responses vary.
What commonly triggers Malassezia folliculitis
Fatty acid-rich oils
Oils containing medium-chain fatty acids in the C11-C24 range are the most well-documented triggers. Common examples include coconut oil (lauric acid, C12), olive oil (oleic acid, C18), argan oil, and many other plant oils. Note that not all oils are equal -- squalane derived from sugarcane (not shark liver, which contains fatty acids) is generally considered Malassezia-safe because its structure does not provide the lipid nutrition yeast relies on.
Esters and emollients
Many esters used as skin-softening emollients in moisturisers and serums contain esterified fatty acids. Common ones to be cautious of include isopropyl myristate, isopropyl palmitate, polysorbates (Polysorbate 20, 60, 80), and sorbitan olivate. These appear frequently in otherwise gentle, well-formulated products.
Fermented ingredients
Fermented yeast extracts -- most notably galactomyces ferment filtrate, a popular ingredient in Korean and Japanese skincare -- are a commonly reported trigger. The biochemical reasoning is that the fermentation process produces fatty acids that Malassezia can utilise. That said, not everyone with Malassezia folliculitis reacts to galactomyces, and some formulations have undergone processing to remove the problematic fractions. If you love a product containing fermented yeast extract and your skin is fine with it, that is valid observational data -- the goal is to observe your skin, not follow a blanket avoid list.

- Ceramides (synthetic, non-oil-based)
- Panthenol (vitamin B5)
- Allantoin
Nuances worth knowing
Concentration matters
A product with polysorbate 20 listed near the bottom of the ingredient list (meaning low concentration) may not trigger a response in the same way as a product where a problematic oil is a primary ingredient. Some people with Malassezia folliculitis can tolerate low-concentration triggers; others cannot. This is one area where individual skin observation is more reliable than a theoretical avoid list.
Ceramides: a common question
Ceramides are important for barrier repair, and many people with fungal acne-prone skin also have a compromised barrier. Ceramides sourced synthetically (e.g., ceramide NP, EOP, AP in moisturisers) are generally considered safe for Malassezia folliculitis. The concern arises when ceramides are delivered in a base containing significant fatty acid-rich oils -- the ceramide itself is fine, but the surrounding formulation may not be. Look for ceramide products with lightweight, oil-free or low-oil formulations.
SPF is a common culprit in humid climates
Many physical and chemical SPFs, especially the rich, creamy formulations popular for their elegance and finish, contain emollient esters or polysorbates as part of their base. For daily sun protection in humid climates, lighter mineral SPFs with simple formulations are often better tolerated. Check the ingredients before committing to a new SPF if Malassezia folliculitis is a concern.
Always patch test new products on a small area before applying to your full face or body. Observe the patch for 24-48 hours, and wait a full week before concluding a product is non-triggering, as Malassezia folliculitis responses can take a few days to appear.
