Glycerin is a humectant that draws water to the skin surface and supports barrier function as a building block of skin lipids. It is one of the most studied and broadly safe moisturising ingredients available. Well-tolerated by sensitive, oily, and fungal acne-prone skin. Found across all price ranges.

A naturally occurring molecule in the skin that holds water. Topical HA draws moisture to the skin surface. Multiple molecular weights penetrate to different depths. Most effective applied to slightly damp skin, then sealed with a moisturiser. In humid climates, this is less of a concern than in dry environments.

The primary lipid component of the skin barrier. Ceramide-containing moisturisers support barrier repair over consistent use. Particularly relevant for atopic dermatitis and compromised barrier states. Ceramide NP, AP, and EOP are common in formulations.

Centella and its active compounds (madecassoside, asiaticoside, asiatic acid) are among the most widely used calming ingredients in Asian skincare. Particularly popular in Korean and Singaporean skincare markets.
Fungal acne safety: Safe. Centella extracts are well-suited to the no-oil, soothing approach for Malassezia folliculitis-prone skin.
One of the most evidence-backed soothing ingredients for itchy, inflamed skin. FDA-recognised skin protectant. Beta-glucan content forms a protective film and modulates inflammatory signalling. Used in cleansers, moisturisers, and bath products for eczema-prone and heat-rash-affected skin.
Note: Some formulations contain oat oils or fatty acids that may not be ideal for Malassezia folliculitis. Check ingredient lists if fungal acne is also a concern.
A naturally occurring compound (also synthesised for cosmetic use) with softening and mild soothing properties. Widely used in gentle and sensitive-skin formulations. Well-tolerated, generally safe across skin types. Fungal acne safe.
Contains zinc oxide and ferric oxide. Calamine lotion is widely used across Asia for prickly heat and itching. Provides a cooling sensation and commonly helps soothe mild itch. Leaves a visible residue (best used at night). Not a treatment, but widely tolerated and accessible.

Acne & Congestion
One of the most versatile, well-evidenced, and well-tolerated ingredients in skincare. Niacinamide at 5-10% regulates sebum production, inhibits melanin transfer (supporting brightening), supports barrier function, and reduces post-breakout redness. Suitable for all skin types, including sensitive and fungal acne-prone skin.
Fungal acne safety: Safe. One of the most recommended ingredients for FA-prone skin.
Oil-soluble beta hydroxy acid that penetrates inside pores to dissolve sebum and dead cell buildup. Strong evidence for comedonal acne and oily skin congestion. 0.5-2% in leave-on formulations; higher percentages in washes. Key ingredient for blackheads, sebaceous filament management, and body acne.
Fungal acne safety: Safe. BHA does not treat Malassezia, but it is not a trigger either. It can help manage any concurrent comedonal component.
A dicarboxylic acid with multiple mechanisms: inhibits tyrosinase (anti-pigmentation), has mild antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, and is used in the management of rosacea and post-acne marks. Generally well-tolerated even by sensitive skin, though may cause initial tingling.
Fungal acne safety: Safe. Azelaic acid is Malassezia-safe and may be a particularly useful choice for skin managing both PIH and fungal acne-prone skin.
Zinc in various forms has sebum-regulating, mild antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties. Zinc oxide is a physical sunscreen agent (broad-spectrum) and is mildly antifungal. Pyrithione zinc is used in antifungal shampoos and some body washes for Malassezia folliculitis management.
Fungal acne safety: Safe and potentially helpful. Zinc oxide SPFs are a commonly recommended choice for FA-prone skin.
Brightening
Antioxidant that inhibits melanin synthesis (tyrosinase inhibition). Strong evidence for brightening and PIH management. Formulation stability is a significant variable -- L-ascorbic acid is most potent but also most unstable; derivatives (ascorbyl glucoside, sodium ascorbyl phosphate) are more stable but vary in efficacy.
Note: Can sting on compromised or sensitive skin. Not recommended during barrier recovery phases. Most vitamin C formulations contain no fungal acne-triggering ingredients, but check the base.
Growing evidence specifically for melasma. Generally well-tolerated, including by sensitive skin. Works by blocking the interaction between UV-stimulated melanocytes and keratinocytes rather than directly inhibiting tyrosinase. Newer ingredient category with encouraging but still accumulating clinical data.
