What collagen is and how the body makes it
Collagen is the most abundant structural protein in the skin. It forms a dense network in the dermis that gives skin its firmness and mechanical resilience. Elastin works alongside collagen to allow skin to stretch and spring back. Both are made inside skin fibroblast cells from amino acids obtained through dietary protein.
Collagen production is a continuous process throughout life, but it slows from the mid-twenties onward as fibroblast activity declines and existing collagen breaks down faster than it is replaced. Sun exposure, smoking, and chronically poor nutrition all accelerate this process.
Eating a food that contains collagen (like bone broth or collagen supplements) does not deliver intact collagen to the skin. Dietary proteins are broken down into amino acids during digestion, regardless of their source. Food supports the raw materials and cofactors that the body uses to synthesise its own collagen. It cannot lift skin, reverse existing collagen loss, or substitute for sun protection and topical retinoids, which have stronger clinical evidence for slowing skin ageing.

They are incorporated into cell membrane phospholipids, contributing to membrane fluidity and barrier function. They also modulate inflammatory pathways, which has implications for reducing the chronic low-level inflammation that can accelerate collagen degradation.
Several observational studies have associated higher omega-3 intake with improved skin elasticity and hydration. The effect size is modest, but the combination of plausible mechanism and consistent observational data makes omega-3 intake worth considering.
Omega-3 sources in Southeast and East Asian diets
- Oily fish: Mackerel (ikan kembung) and sardines (ikan sardin) are affordable, high omega-3 fish widely eaten across Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore. Canned sardines in tomato sauce are an accessible everyday option. Salmon is available but more expensive.
- Ikan bilis (anchovies): A storecupboard staple across SEA, used in sambal, soups, and as a topping for nasi lemak. Provides meaningful omega-3 alongside calcium from the small bones.
- Soybeans and tofu: Contain ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), a plant-based omega-3. The body converts ALA to EPA and DHA, though conversion is relatively inefficient. Still a useful contribution for people who eat little oily fish.
- Walnuts and flaxseed: High ALA sources. Walnuts are available in most Asian supermarkets; ground flaxseed can be added to congee, smoothies, or yoghurt.
Rather than trying to eat specific quantities of specific nutrients, a useful framing is: aim to include a protein source at most meals, eat oily fish two or three times a week, and include plenty of colourful produce across the day. This naturally provides the protein, vitamin C, and omega-3s that support collagen synthesis and skin structure over time -- without tracking or restriction.
Colourful produce and antioxidants
Antioxidants found in fruit and vegetables help limit the oxidative damage that breaks down collagen. UV radiation, pollution, and normal metabolism all generate reactive oxygen species (free radicals) that degrade collagen and elastin. Vitamin C, vitamin E, and polyphenols from plant foods act as antioxidant defences in skin tissue.
