How vitamin C relates to skin tone
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is essential for collagen synthesis, and it also plays a role in regulating melanin production. In the body, vitamin C inhibits the activity of tyrosinase, the enzyme that triggers melanin formation. It also helps neutralise the oxidative stress that drives uneven pigmentation from UV exposure.
Dietary vitamin C is different from topical vitamin C serums, which act directly at the skin surface. Food-derived vitamin C circulates through the body and reaches the skin as part of general tissue nutrition. The benefits are real but slower and less targeted than topical application. Both are worth considering.
UV exposure is the primary driver of uneven pigmentation, dark spots, and accelerated melanin production in Asian skin. No dietary change produces meaningful results if UV exposure continues daily without protection. SPF 30 or higher, applied every morning and reapplied in direct sun, is the foundation that makes everything else more effective.

Guava (jambu batu)
One of the richest natural sources of vitamin C. A single medium guava provides well over 200mg -- more than double the daily recommended intake for most adults. Widely available across SEA year-round.

Often overlooked as a vitamin C source. Red capsicum contains more vitamin C per 100g than citrus fruit, and holds much of its content even after light cooking.

Research on green tea and skin is ongoing, with some evidence for photoprotective effects and reduced UV-induced oxidative damage. Both brewed tea and matcha are relevant sources; the catechin concentration in matcha is higher.
Tomatoes and lycopene
Tomatoes are a primary source of lycopene, a carotenoid with strong antioxidant activity. Lycopene concentrates in skin tissue and may help reduce UV-induced oxidative stress. Cooking increases lycopene bioavailability, so cooked tomato dishes and tomato-based sauces are actually more useful dietary sources than raw tomatoes.
Mangosteen, dragon fruit, and tropical berries
Mangosteen, native to Southeast Asia, contains xanthones, a class of polyphenol with antioxidant properties. Dragon fruit (pitaya) contains betacyanins and vitamin C. While the evidence for specific skin effects from these fruits is limited, including them as part of a varied, colourful diet contributes to overall antioxidant intake.
Carotenoids and skin radiance
Carotenoids are the yellow-orange-red pigments found in many fruits and vegetables. Beta-carotene, lutein, and lycopene all accumulate in skin tissue and may contribute to a subtle, healthy skin tone. This is a well-documented physiological effect, though it is gradual and modest.
- Beta-carotene: carrots, sweet potato, pumpkin, mango, papaya -- all common in Asian cooking
- Lutein and zeaxanthin: dark leafy greens (spinach, kai lan, kangkung water spinach), corn, egg yolk

Including a wide range of colourful produce regularly is more effective than eating large amounts of a single antioxidant-rich food. Different antioxidants work through different pathways; variety across the colour spectrum (red, orange, yellow, green, purple) covers more bases than any single superfood approach.
Realistic expectations
Dietary changes that support skin brightness work over months, not days. Most people eating a varied diet that includes plenty of fruit and vegetables are already getting meaningful amounts of these nutrients. The goal is consistency and variety, not measuring milligrams or seeking specific foods obsessively.
For existing hyperpigmentation, dark spots, or uneven tone, topical skincare (vitamin C serum, niacinamide, azelaic acid) acts more directly than dietary changes. Both can be part of an overall approach.
