What Is Salicylic Acid?

Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid, or BHA, derived originally from willow bark. The thing that sets it apart from acids like glycolic or lactic acid is that it's oil-soluble. Glycolic and lactic are water-soluble AHAs that work on the skin's surface. Salicylic acid, being oil-loving, can travel down into an oil-filled pore and exfoliate from within. That's the whole reason it's the go-to for congestion and acne.

Inside the pore it does three useful things. It breaks apart the bonds between dead skin cells so they shed instead of clogging, it helps regulate oil, and it calms inflammation. Liu and colleagues tracked 42 people using a salicylic acid gel for 21 days and published the results in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology in 2025. Sebum fell 23.65 percent over the three weeks, dropping steadily rather than all at once (9.10 percent by day 2, 15.21 by day 5, 18.00 by day 10). Skin hydration rose 40.5 percent across the same period. Trans-epidermal water loss, a measure of how much moisture escapes through a leaky barrier, dropped 49.26 percent within six hours of application. That last one is a short-term reading, not a three-week outcome, but it does argue against the stripped, tight feeling people brace for.

Why Is Salicylic Acid Good for Asian Skin?

Two reasons stand out. First, climate and oil. Much of Asia is hot and humid for months on end, and heat ramps up oil production. More sebum means more raw material for clogged pores, so an ingredient that clears pores from the inside is genuinely well matched to the conditions here. Second, breakouts on Asian skin often leave a mark. A spot heals and a brown or grey shadow stays behind for weeks or months. That's post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or PIH. Here's the honest picture on how common it is, because a lot of skincare writing overstates this. Perkins and colleagues surveyed 2,895 women for the Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology in 2011 and found acne-related hyperpigmentation in 65 percent of African American, 48 percent of Hispanic, 25 percent of Caucasian, 18 percent of Asian, and 10 percent of Continental Indian participants. So Asian skin isn't the worst affected group, and it actually sat below Caucasian skin in that data.

But 18 percent is still close to one in five, and PIH is genuinely stubborn once it appears. A 2024 systematic review in the Journal of Cutaneous Medicine and Surgery pooled 48 studies covering 1,356 people with darker skin tones, 27 percent of them Asian, and concluded that treatment results across every method studied leave considerable room for improvement. That's the real argument for salicylic acid here. Fading a dark mark is slow and unreliable. Not getting the spot in the first place is far easier, and that's the part salicylic acid is genuinely good at.

Which Concentration Should You Use, 0.5% or 2%?

The range isn't arbitrary. The US Food and Drug Administration's monograph for over-the-counter topical acne products, codified at 21 CFR 333.310, permits salicylic acid as a single active ingredient at 0.5 to 2 percent. Anything sold to you above 2 percent for daily home use is outside that monograph.

And higher isn't automatically better. A double-blind comparison in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology pitted a 0.5 percent salicylic acid regimen against a 2.5 percent benzoyl peroxide one. On inflammatory lesions, the red angry spots, they came out equivalent, and far fewer people on salicylic acid got dry skin (3 versus 12). But benzoyl peroxide clearly won on the non-inflammatory side, cutting comedones 57 percent against salicylic acid's 21 percent. Worth knowing if blackheads and closed comedones are your main problem rather than inflamed spots. The right number depends on your skin and on which kind of acne you actually have.

What about the in-clinic peels above 2 percent?

That last row in the table deserves more than a line, because the peel research happens to be some of the best Asian-specific evidence salicylic acid has. Lee, Kim and Monheit treated 35 Korean patients with 30 percent salicylic acid peels every two weeks for 12 weeks, with a blinded evaluator counting lesions, and published it in Dermatologic Surgery in 2003. Both inflammatory and non-inflammatory lesion counts dropped in proportion to how long treatment ran, the Cunliffe acne grade fell significantly, and side effects stayed tolerable for most people.

The follow-up study is the one worth knowing if marks are your worry. Ahn and Kim gave 24 patients full-face 30 percent salicylic acid peels twice weekly for three months and measured skin colour objectively with reflectance spectrophotometry rather than eyeballing it, publishing in Dermatologic Surgery in 2006. Skin darkened slightly after the first peel, then lightened progressively across the rest, with redness dropping significantly from the second peel onward. Their conclusion was that salicylic acid peels have a genuine whitening effect on Asian skin with acne.

Two things to take from that. The temporary darkening after a first peel is documented and expected, so it isn't a sign the peel has backfired on you. And these are 30 percent professional treatments performed by a clinician, roughly fifteen times the strength of your 2 percent toner. Nothing here is a case for buying a stronger product online. It's a case for seeing a dermatologist if over-the-counter strengths haven't moved things after a few months.

For most oily Asian skin, a 2 percent leave-on used two or three times a week is a solid starting point. If your skin is drier, reactive, or the barrier already feels tight, start at 0.5 to 1 percent, or use a salicylic cleanser that rinses off rather than sits on the skin. The formula and how long it stays on your face matter as much as the raw percentage.

Does Supramolecular Salicylic Acid Work Better?

If you shop Chinese or wider Asian brands you'll keep running into this term, and it's not marketing fluff. Supramolecular salicylic acid, usually shortened to SSA, is ordinary salicylic acid bound into a carrier structure so it disperses in water and releases slowly onto the skin instead of hitting it all at once. The point is to keep the pore-clearing action while cutting the sting. It's been studied a lot more in China than in the West, which is exactly why most English-language skincare writing skips it.

The trial worth knowing about set 2 percent SSA against a prescription-strength combination. Zheng and colleagues at Sun Yat-sen University ran an open-label, randomised, split-face study over 28 days, published in Cutaneous and Ocular Toxicology in 2019, with 31 patients completing it. One side of the face got 2 percent SSA. The other got 5 percent benzoyl peroxide with 0.1 percent adapalene.

The two sides came out level. Papules and pustules fell 47.9 percent on the SSA side against 49.8 percent on the benzoyl peroxide side. Non-inflammatory lesions dropped 43.1 versus 42.7 percent, and total lesions 44.1 versus 45.6 percent. None of those gaps reached statistical significance. The tolerability readings tracked the same way, with no significant difference between sides on skin hydration, water loss, brightness, or redness.

Put that next to the older comparison further up this page and something useful falls out. In that study a 0.5 percent salicylic acid regimen got badly beaten on comedones, clearing 21 percent against benzoyl peroxide's 57 percent. Here a 2 percent supramolecular version held its own against benzoyl peroxide plus a retinoid. Concentration is part of that gap, but so is how the acid is delivered and how long it stays active on the skin. The number on the bottle was never the whole story.

Now the caveats, because 31 people is not a large trial. It ran open-label, meaning everyone knew which side got what, it lasted only 28 days, and it happened at a single centre. None of that makes SSA a miracle, and it doesn't mean you should ditch a routine that's already working. What it reasonably supports is this: if you see supramolecular salicylic acid on a label, there's real evidence behind it, and a 2 percent SSA product is a sensible thing to try if standard formulas sting.

Yan and colleagues used it after photodynamic therapy in 19 patients with moderate to severe acne, reported in Clinical and Experimental Dermatology in 2025, and found it cut lesions further without extra barrier damage. That's a dermatologist's procedure with a dermatologist's aftercare, not something to order and apply at your bathroom sink.

How Do You Use Salicylic Acid?

Slow and steady wins here. Salicylic acid goes on after cleansing, on dry skin, before your heavier creams. You can use it morning or night, though many people prefer night.

A realistic timeline. Blackheads and small bumps often ease within two to four weeks. Fuller clearing of mild-to-moderate acne usually takes 8 to 12 weeks of steady use. If nothing has shifted after three months, or the acne is deep and painful, see a dermatologist rather than pushing the strength higher.

Does a Salicylic Acid Cleanser Work as Well as a Serum?

This one comes up constantly, and the usual answer is no, a cleanser rinses off in thirty seconds so it can't do much. That's the intuitive reading. But there's decent evidence it undersells what a well-formulated cleanser can do.

Levin, Lyu and He ran a randomised 28-day trial on 42 Chinese participants aged 18 to 50 with combination or oily skin, and published it in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology in 2026. Half the group described their skin as sensitive. The product was a rinse-off amino acid cleanser carrying 2 percent salicylic acid alongside gluconolactone, niacinamide, and ceramides.

The numbers after four weeks were better than "rinses off in thirty seconds" would suggest. Forehead sebum fell 25.64 percent. Open comedones dropped 55.41 percent, pustules 61.29 percent, and papules 46.28 percent. Barrier function measured by water loss improved 12.04 percent and hydration rose 24.17 percent, which matters given half the group called their skin sensitive. No adverse events across the whole study.

Two honest caveats before you throw out your serum. This was one cleanser with a specific supporting cast, and the niacinamide and ceramides in it are doing real work on the barrier and hydration numbers, so you can't credit all of that to the salicylic acid. And 42 people over 28 days is a small, short trial with no comparison against a leave-on product, so it tells you a good cleanser does something useful, not that it beats a serum.

Where this actually helps you: if your barrier is easily upset, or you already run retinoids or other acids, a rinse-off cleanser is a genuinely reasonable way to get salicylic acid into your routine without adding another leave-on layer. It's not the compromise option people assume it is.

Can It Help With Fungal Acne and Dark Spots?

Two common questions, two honest answers. On fungal acne first. Those uniform, itchy little bumps aren't true acne. They're an overgrowth of yeast, so pore-clearing alone won't cure them, and many rich acne creams actually feed the yeast. Salicylic acid is a useful supporting player here because it keeps pores clear and doesn't feed malassezia, but real fungal acne needs an antifungal to clear.
