The Sebum Science
Sebaceous glands are distributed across the entire body (except the palms and soles), with the highest density on the face, scalp, chest and back. Sebum production is primarily regulated by androgens -- testosterone and its more potent derivative dihydrotestosterone (DHT) stimulate sebaceous gland activity, which is why sebum production increases at puberty and varies significantly between individuals.
Temperature affects sebum in two ways. Higher skin temperatures increase sebum viscosity -- hot skin produces more fluid sebum that spreads more easily across the surface. This is why the same person produces visibly oilier skin in summer than winter.
In high humidity environments like Singapore (year-round average 80-84% relative humidity), sebum also evaporates from the skin surface more slowly. The accumulation effect on the surface -- not an increase in gland output -- is what produces that midday shine that appears within hours of washing in tropical climates.
Sweat compounds the issue. Eccrine sweat glands are active in heat, and sweat mixing with sebum creates a more visibly shiny surface film than sebum alone.
The Dehydration-Oil Trap
One of the most counterproductive patterns in oily skin management is the instinct to strip the skin. Harsh foaming cleansers, alcohol-based toners and skipping moisturiser all compromise the skin barrier. When the barrier is disrupted, transepidermal water loss (TEWL) increases -- skin loses moisture -- and sebaceous glands compensate by producing more sebum.
Oily skin can be simultaneously dehydrated. Surface oil is not the same as internal skin moisture. Over-cleansing removes both sebum and the natural moisturising factors (NMFs) that keep skin hydrated. The result: more oil production, more shine, and a skin barrier that is less able to defend against acne bacteria and environmental irritants.
The correct response to oily skin in the tropics is not to dry it out. It is to maintain a healthy, hydrated barrier while using targeted actives -- primarily niacinamide and BHA -- to regulate sebum production at the gland level.
Building a Tropical Oily Skin Routine
Control without stripping. Every step should be lightweight, non-comedogenic and hydrating.
Morning Routine
- Low-pH gentle gel cleanser -- not a foaming bar soap (which is alkaline and disrupts the acid mantle). Look for pH 4.5-5.5 gel formulas labelled "low pH" or check reviews from skincare communities that test pH. The skin's naturally acidic surface pH supports barrier function, as documented by the National Institutes of Health (PMC).
- Hydrating water toner -- containing niacinamide and/or centella asiatica. Applied by pressing into skin with clean hands, not wiping with a cotton pad.
- Niacinamide 10% serum -- regulates sebum production, minimises pore appearance, reduces post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) and provides anti-inflammatory support. The single most useful active for tropical oily skin.
- Oil-free gel moisturiser -- do not skip. A well-formulated gel moisturiser with hyaluronic acid and glycerin provides hydration without comedogenic oils. The Best Ingredients for Tropical Oily Skin
Petrolatum, lanolin and heavy plant oils (coconut oil, avocado oil, marula oil) as facial ingredients. What Not to Do
- Do not use alcohol-based toners -- they strip the acid mantle, trigger rebound oiliness and damage the barrier over time.
