Hyaluronic acid works for Asian skin, and the humid climate most of us live in actually makes it easier to use well, not harder. It's a humectant, meaning it pulls water into the top layers of your skin. The two things that decide whether you get anything from it are applying it to damp skin and putting a moisturiser over the top. Skip either and you've bought an expensive bottle of nothing.
That's the short version. Here's what the research actually shows, including one number the marketing gets badly wrong.
What is hyaluronic acid and how does it work?
Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule your body already makes. It sits in your skin, your joints, and your eyes, holding water in place. Roughly half the hyaluronic acid in your body lives in your skin, which is why it turns up in so many serums.
As a skincare ingredient it's a humectant. Humectants attract water molecules and hold them in the stratum corneum, your outermost skin layer. Glycerin does the same job, and honestly glycerin is cheaper and does it very well, but hyaluronic acid has the better marketing department.
Here's the part that matters. A humectant attracts water. It doesn't keep it there. Without something over the top to slow evaporation, that water leaves. This single fact explains almost every complaint people have about hyaluronic acid.
Does it really hold 1000 times its weight in water?
Not on your face, no.
You'll see that claim on nearly every hyaluronic acid product sold in Asia. It comes from laboratory conditions with pure hyaluronic acid in solution, which is not remotely what's happening when you press a serum into your cheeks.
A 2025 review of hyaluronic acid in topical applications, published in the journal Biomolecules, reports the actual measured figure: hyaluronic acid holds roughly 0.7 to 2 grams of water per gram of the molecule. So somewhere between about one and two times its weight, not a thousand.
If you believed the 1000x claim, you'd assume a few drops of serum can hydrate your whole face on its own. They can't. That expectation is exactly why people layer serum on dry skin, skip moisturiser, and then conclude hyaluronic acid does nothing for them.
None of this means the ingredient is useless. It just means it's a good hydrating step rather than a miracle, and it needs the rest of your routine to do its job.
Which molecular weight actually reaches your skin?
This is where product labels start being genuinely informative, if you know what to look for.
Hyaluronic acid comes in different molecular sizes, measured in kilodaltons (kDa). Size decides how far into your skin it can go. Essendoubi and colleagues tested this directly using Raman spectroscopy on human skin, publishing in Skin Research and Technology in 2016, and the results are clearer than most skincare research gets.

Broadly, hyaluronic acid below 100 kDa penetrates skin, and anything above roughly 400 kDa stays put on the surface.
So is small better? Not automatically. High molecular weight hyaluronic acid forms a film that reduces water loss and gives that instant smooth, plump look. Low molecular weight gets deeper hydration but does less on the surface. The good news is that most decent serums now use a blend of several sizes, which is genuinely the sensible approach rather than just a marketing line. If a product lists "sodium hyaluronate" alongside "hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid," that's a blend.
Does hyaluronic acid work differently in humid Asia?
Yes, and mostly in your favour.
Humectants pull water from whatever's available, which includes the air around you. In a dry climate there's not much water in the air to grab. In Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, or Jakarta, there's plenty.
The Meteorological Service Singapore puts the mean annual relative humidity at around 82 percent, climbing above 90 percent before sunrise and dropping to about 60 percent on dry afternoons. That's a genuinely favourable environment for a humectant. Much of Southeast Asia sits in a similar band year round.
But here's the catch nobody mentions. Most of us don't actually spend our days in that 82 percent. We spend them in air conditioning, and air conditioners work by removing moisture from air. So you can live in one of the most humid countries on earth and still put your skin through eight or nine hours of dry air every working day, then sleep in more of it.

The practical upshot: hyaluronic acid is a good fit for Asia, but treat the office as a separate climate from the street.
Why does it sometimes make skin feel drier?
Almost always one of two reasons, and both are fixable in about ten seconds.
You applied it to bone-dry skin. A humectant needs water to bind. Put it on completely dry skin in a dehumidified room and the most available water source is your own skin. The commonly repeated version of this is that hyaluronic acid then "pulls water from deeper layers," and while the mechanistic evidence for that specific claim is thinner than skincare blogs imply, the practical result is well documented. Skin feels tight.
You didn't seal it. Even when hyaluronic acid successfully draws water to your surface, that water sits exposed and evaporates. You've moved moisture upward to a place it can escape from more easily.
The fix for both is the same, and it's what the American Academy of Dermatology recommends for moisturising generally: apply to skin that's still damp, and look for products combining humectants like hyaluronic acid and glycerin with lipids like ceramides and occlusives that stop evaporation. All three parts, not just the first.
How should you apply hyaluronic acid?
Six steps, and the first two carry most of the weight.
- Cleanse and pat, don't dry. Leave your face slightly damp. Not dripping, just not fully dry.
- Apply within a minute. In aircon, skin dries faster than you think. If you've been scrolling your phone for five minutes, mist or splash lightly first.
- Use less than you think. Three to four drops for the whole face. More serum doesn't equal more hydration, it just costs more.
- Press, don't rub. Pat it in with your palms.
- Seal it, always. Moisturiser on top, every time. In humid weather a light gel is fine. In heavy aircon go slightly richer. This step is not optional, and it's the one people skip.

How much difference does doing this properly make? An open-label study of a topical hyaluronic acid cream measured skin hydration by corneometer and found a 24 percent increase at four weeks, rising to 38.9 percent at twelve weeks, with all participants showing improvement (published in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology). It was open-label and industry-run though, so treat the exact figures as generous. But the shape of the result is consistent across studies: instant surface effect, real change over weeks.
Does hyaluronic acid do anything besides hydrate?
A bit, yes. But far less than the packaging suggests, and the honest answer here saves you money.
Bravo and colleagues reviewed the evidence in Dermatologic Therapy (2022, 35:e15903). Your skin's own hyaluronic acid starts declining from around age 25, which is the biological hook every anti-aging serum is built on. They cite a randomised controlled trial of 40 women with mild to moderate signs of aging who used six types of hyaluronic acid at different molecular weights for 30 days and saw improvement in skin appearance against placebo. The same team ran their own 24-week trial with 63 women, and the group using a hyaluronic acid serum alongside botulinum toxin saw better results on fine lines, crow's feet, and elasticity than the toxin alone.
So there's something there. Fine lines soften, texture improves, skin looks better. Just be clear about the mechanism, because most of that is hydration doing its job. Plump, well-hydrated skin genuinely looks smoother. That's a real effect, not a trick, and it's also temporary in a way that collagen-building ingredients aren't.
Where the marketing goes too far is volume. Dermatologists Kristina Liu and Janelle Nassim wrote for Harvard Health Publishing that topical hyaluronic acid "will never be as effective as an injectable HA filler for replacing lost volume," and that it can't meaningfully address volume loss or skin laxity. A serum and a filler share a name and almost nothing else. One sits in your stratum corneum. The other is placed under your skin by a doctor.

Hyaluronic acid is a very good hydrator with a mild cosmetic smoothing effect. It isn't a retinoid, it isn't a filler, and it won't rebuild collagen. Do hyaluronic acid drinks and supplements work?
You can't walk through a convenience store in Tokyo, Seoul, or Taipei without passing a shelf of hyaluronic acid drinks, jellies, and capsules. The category is enormous in Asia and almost invisible in the West, so most English-language skincare advice just ignores it. Turns out the evidence is better than you'd guess.
A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 150 healthy adults published in Scientific Reports (2026) split participants into three groups of 50: 60 mg a day of sodium hyaluronate, 120 mg a day, or placebo, for 12 weeks. Both dose groups beat placebo on skin hydration, with cheek measurements up 9.1 percent on the lower dose and 11.5 percent on the higher one. Forehead readings improved too.
The barrier results are the more interesting bit. Transepidermal water loss dropped significantly at both the cheek and forehead after three months in both supplement groups. That's your skin leaking less water, measured rather than felt, and it's the exact thing topical hyaluronic acid can't do on its own. Periorbital wrinkle depth also fell against placebo, showing up as early as one month. The higher dose group additionally saw lower sebum, thicker epidermis, and better elasticity.
The trial ran in 150 Caucasian adults. Nobody has run the same study in Asian skin, which sits at higher Fitzpatrick types with a different barrier and sebum profile. The direction of the finding is probably transferable. The exact percentages might not be. And a 12-week trial tells you nothing about what happens at year three.
Two more things worth knowing. Those gains are real but modest, and 11 percent more hydration is not a visible transformation in the mirror. A daily supplement for three months also costs considerably more than a decent serum and a moisturiser used properly. If you're choosing one, fix the topical routine first, because that's where the biggest and cheapest gains are.
Can you use it with other actives?
Yes. Hyaluronic acid is one of the most cooperative ingredients in skincare, which is part of why it's everywhere.
- With retinol: genuinely helpful. Applying hyaluronic acid before or after retinol buffers dryness during the adjustment period.
- With vitamin C: fine. Vitamin C serum first, then hyaluronic acid, then moisturiser.
