What Is Double Cleansing, Exactly?
Double cleansing is washing your face twice in a row with two different kinds of cleanser. The first is oil-based, a cleansing oil or balm, and its job is to dissolve the things water can't touch: sunscreen, makeup, and your own sebum. The second is water-based, usually a gel or light foam, and it clears away sweat, dirt and whatever the oil left behind.
The chemistry is genuinely simple. Like dissolves like. Sunscreen is designed to survive sweat and water, which is exactly why a water-based cleanser struggles with it, and exactly why an oil cleanser doesn't. But an oil cleanser on its own tends to leave a film, so the second step exists to rinse the first one off properly.
That's the whole method. It came out of Korean and Japanese routines and got picked up everywhere else, and somewhere along the way it stopped being a technique for removing sunscreen and started being sold as a daily requirement for everyone. Those aren't the same claim.
Does It Actually Have Evidence Behind It?
Less than you'd guess from the way it's marketed. And the mainstream dermatology position is noticeably cooler than the beauty-industry one.
Cleveland Clinic puts it plainly through dermatologist Dr. Jane Wu: double cleansing can help people who wear makeup, especially waterproof makeup or waterproof sunscreen, but for most people, washing once thoroughly with a gentle cleanser is more than adequate. She also offers a shortcut most guides skip, which is that micellar water before a water-based cleanser works as a perfectly good alternative to a full oil cleanse.
Her warning about the downside is worth quoting directly. Overwashing, she says, leads to dryness, irritation and the breakdown of the skin barrier, which then causes problems like breakouts and eczema. So the failure mode of double cleansing isn't that it does nothing. It's that doing it on days you didn't need to can actively make your skin worse.
You'll also find articles citing a Seoul National University study that supposedly found double cleansing removes 73 percent more pollutants, and a trial showing 68 percent of acne patients improved. We went looking for both and couldn't find either in any journal or institutional source. They appear only on product marketing pages. Treat them as invented until someone produces a citation.
Removing water-resistant sunscreen. That's the strongest, least disputed case for it, and in a climate where you're reapplying SPF through the day it's a real one. The claims about pore size, acne cure rates and radiance are where the evidence thins out fast.
How Much Sunscreen Does Each Method Leave Behind?
Somebody actually measured this, which is more than you can say for most cleansing advice. And the numbers are the clearest answer in this whole article to the question of when you need two steps and when you don't.
Wei Chen, Mei He, Li Xie and Li Li put 20 volunteers through it for the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology in 2020. They applied sunscreen, photographed each face with VISIA imaging, then washed it off three different ways and measured what was still sitting on the skin.
For ordinary, non-waterproof sunscreen the residue left behind came out at 54.0 percent with water alone, 15.6 percent with a foaming cleanser, and 13.4 percent with a cleansing oil. Look at those last two figures. The gap between a plain cleanser and an oil cleanser is under 3 percentage points. On an everyday sunscreen, your normal face wash is doing essentially the same job the oil would.
Then they ran it again with water-resistant sunscreen, and the picture completely changed. Water alone left 59.3 percent. The foaming cleanser left 36.8 percent, meaning more than a third of the product was still on the face after washing. The cleansing oil left 5.8 percent. That's roughly a sixfold difference between the two cleansers on the same face.
So the honest rule falls out of the data by itself. Wearing everyday SPF? One good cleanse is genuinely fine. Wearing water-resistant SPF, the kind you'd pick for a beach day, a long commute, or anything involving sweat? That's when the oil step stops being optional, because a foaming wash leaves over a third of it behind and you'll be applying your serums on top of that.
One more detail from the same study, and it cuts against the usual assumption. Eight of the volunteers reported dry skin after the foaming cleanser. Only one did after the cleansing oil. The authors suggested the oil may cause less irritation and dryness than the cleanser, which is worth holding onto if you've been avoiding oil cleansers because they sound heavy. The heavy-feeling step was the gentler one here.
Keep the size of this in proportion, though. Twenty people, one lab, one pair of products. It's the best direct measurement we have of a question everyone argues about, and it's still a small study.
What Does Cleansing Do to Your Skin Microbiome?
Every time you wash your face you're not just removing sunscreen. You're disturbing an ecosystem. And the reassuring news is that it bounces back faster than the scaremongering suggests.
Sfriso and Claypool tracked this properly in Microorganisms in 2020, sampling the skin of 30 healthy women aged 25 to 45 at set intervals after cleansing. An hour after washing, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Cutibacterium acnes had both dropped. By six hours they were growing back, which surprised the researchers because C. acnes is normally slow to multiply. By 24 hours the community had restructured into what they called a dynamic equilibrium, and it stayed stable through day seven.
Worth being precise about the limits: that study used a body wash, not a facial cleanser, and 30 people is a small sample. So treat the timeline as indicative rather than exact.
Still, the shape of the finding is useful. Your microbiome recovers from cleansing within about a day. That's an argument against panicking over one wash, and also an argument against washing so often that you never let the recovery finish. If you cleanse morning and night, you're roughly matching the recovery cycle. Cleanse four or five times a day, as some people do when they feel oily in the heat, and you're restarting the disruption before it resolves.
The other thing the research points at is the surfactant, not the step count. Harsh detergents like sodium lauryl sulfate strip lipids and reduce microbial diversity more than gentle ones do. A gentle second cleanse is easier on the ecosystem than one aggressive foaming wash, which is a genuine point in double cleansing's favour that rarely gets made.
Why Does Tropical Heat Change the Maths?
Here's the part that actually justifies paying attention to cleansing in Southeast Asia, and it isn't marketing.
Your skin makes more oil when it's warmer, and the relationship is measurable. W.J. Cunliffe, J.L. Burton and Sam Shuster tested this on nine subjects and published the results in the British Journal of Dermatology in 1970. Heating and cooling forehead skin produced changes in sebum excretion rate on the order of 10 percent for every 1 degree Celsius, and the shift showed up within 90 minutes. The link between skin temperature and oil output was highly significant.
Sit with that for a second. A skin surface a few degrees warmer in Kuala Lumpur or Manila than in a temperate autumn isn't just producing a bit more oil. It's producing meaningfully more, all day, every day. A follow-up by Williams and colleagues in the same journal in 1973 replicated that roughly 10 percent per degree figure and looked at whether the oil itself changes character, not just the amount. Mostly it does not. The one difference they found was significantly less squalene when the forehead was cooled, with no other measurable shift in surface lipid composition.
So the oiliness you feel by 3pm is real, not imagined. What that justifies is a properly effective evening cleanse. What it does not justify is scrubbing your face four times a day, which is the trap most people fall into.
Heat makes skin feel dirty, so people wash harder. Stripping the barrier triggers the rebound cycle: the drier and more irritated the surface gets, the oilier it behaves. One thorough evening cleanse beats three aggressive ones, every time.
Should You Double Cleanse If You Have Oily Skin?
This is where the advice genuinely splits, and you deserve to know that rather than being handed one side of it.
The American Academy of Dermatology is direct: if you have oily skin, don't use oil-based or alcohol-based cleansers, because they can irritate your skin. The AAD recommends a gentle foaming face wash, cleansing up to twice daily and after sweating, and choosing products labelled oil free and noncomedogenic. It also makes the point that a face wash that's too harsh irritates skin and can trigger more oil production, which is the same rebound cycle from a different angle.
That sits awkwardly against a method whose entire first step is an oil cleanser. Both positions have something to them. The AAD is writing broad public guidance and erring safe, particularly for acne-prone skin. The counterargument is that a modern emulsifying cleansing oil is rinsed off completely and isn't left sitting on the skin, which is a different proposition from an occlusive facial oil.
The practical read: if your skin is oily but calm, a light emulsifying oil is very unlikely to hurt you, and it will remove your sunscreen better than a gel alone. If your skin is oily and acne-prone, take the AAD's caution seriously and use micellar water as your first step instead. This is the question nobody asks until they get the bumps, and in humid Asia it's a genuinely common problem. The short answer: your oil cleanser probably isn't the culprit, but the oil it's made from decides how likely it is.
Fungal acne isn't really acne. It's an overgrowth of Malassezia, a yeast that lives on everyone's skin and thrives in exactly the conditions we have here: heat, sweat, humidity, and occlusion. It shows up as small uniform itchy bumps, usually across the forehead, chest or back, rather than the varied whiteheads and cysts of ordinary acne. Here's the bit that matters for cleansing. Malassezia can't make its own fatty acids, so it has to take them from its surroundings, which is why it feeds on skincare oils. But it's fussy about which ones. Liebregts and colleagues tested individual fatty acids in FEMS Yeast Research in 2025 and found the yeast grew efficiently on palmitic acid (C16:0) and oleic acid (C18:1), the two building blocks of most plant and seed oils. Growth was limited on myristic acid (C14:0) and lauric acid (C12:0), and the longest chains they tested, behenic acid (C22:0) and lignoceric acid (C24:0), didn't meaningfully support growth at all.
Translate that into a shopping decision. Olive, argan, marula and most other botanical oils are rich in oleic acid, so they're the ones worth avoiding if you're prone to the bumps. Mineral oil and squalane aren't fatty acids at all in the form the yeast uses, which is why they keep getting recommended for Malassezia-prone skin. Neither is a guarantee, and reactions vary between people.
Two practical points. First, an oil cleanser sits on your face for maybe a minute before it's emulsified and rinsed away, so it's far less of a feeding opportunity than a leave-on facial oil or a rich cream. If you're getting fungal acne, look at what stays on your skin overnight before you blame the cleanser. Second, the rinse matters more than the oil. Oil cleanser left half-emulsified along the hairline and jaw is a much more plausible trigger than the oil itself, and that's a technique fix rather than a product swap.
What Can't Double Cleansing Do?
Worth spending a minute here, because the gap between what the method does and what it gets sold as is where most of the disappointment comes from. Double cleansing is a removal step. That's the whole job. Everything below gets attached to it in marketing and none of it holds up.
It can't shrink your pores. The American Academy of Dermatology is clear that pore size is largely down to genetics, oil production and age. What cleansing does is unclog them and cut surface oiliness, which changes how big they look. That's a real effect and a worthwhile one. It just isn't the same as making the pore smaller, and no cleanser of any kind does that. The AAD also makes a point that lines up with the technique section below: use warm water rather than hot, because hot water irritates skin and actually makes pores look larger.
It can't detox anything. Your skin doesn't clear toxins through its pores, and nothing is drawn out of you by washing your face. That work belongs to your liver and kidneys. When a cleanser promises to draw out impurities, what it can genuinely do is lift what's sitting on the surface, which is sunscreen, sebum, sweat and pollution. That's plenty. It just isn't detoxification.
It can't treat acne. This is the claim that does the most harm, because it sends people with real acne into washing more instead of getting treatment. Cleansing removes surface oil and leftover product. It doesn't touch the things actually driving acne: hormones, the way skin cells shed inside the follicle, C. acnes activity, and inflammation. Remember that the widely repeated "68 percent of acne patients improved" figure mentioned earlier appears to be invented. Cleansing supports an acne routine. It isn't one.
It can't give you lasting radiance. Skin does look brighter right after a good cleanse, and that's not imaginary. It's a smooth, hydrated surface reflecting light more evenly. It also fades within hours. If glow is what you're after, that comes from hydration, barrier repair and sun protection over months, not from adding a second wash.
None of this is a reason to skip the method on the days it's warranted. The sunscreen removal numbers earlier are genuinely convincing, and that's a real benefit worth having. The point is narrower: judge double cleansing by whether your sunscreen and makeup actually come off, because that's the question it answers. If you're judging it by whether your skin transformed, you'll conclude it failed at something it was never doing.
How Do You Actually Do It Right?
Most people who get a poor result from double cleansing aren't using the wrong products. They're rushing the technique. The steps are boring and they matter.
- Start with dry hands and a dry face. This is the one people get wrong most. Cleansing oil needs to meet your sunscreen without water in between, because water blocks the oil from binding to what you're trying to remove. Wet hands mean the oil emulsifies too early and just slides around.
- Massage for a full 30 to 60 seconds. Sunscreen filters need contact time to dissolve. A quick 10 second swipe is why people conclude their oil cleanser doesn't work. Go gently over the areas SPF actually sits: hairline, jaw, around the nose, in front of the ears.
- Add water and keep massaging until it turns milky. That colour change is the emulsifier doing its job, and it's the step that lets the oil rinse off instead of leaving a film. Skipping it is the usual cause of the greasy feeling people blame on the product.
- Rinse with lukewarm water, not hot. Hot water strips lipids and leaves skin tight. In a hot climate the temptation is a cold rinse instead, which is fine and feels good, though it does less to help the second cleanser spread.
- Second cleanse with a small amount, for about 20 seconds. The heavy lifting is already done. This step just clears residue, so it doesn't need force or a long scrub.
- Pat dry and move on quickly. Apply your next step while skin is still slightly damp. And don't rub with the towel, which is friction your barrier doesn't need.
One thing to leave out entirely: cleansing brushes and rough flannels. They add mechanical irritation to a process that's already chemically effective, and on skin that's dealing with heat and sweat all day that's a bad trade.
When Should You Skip the Second Step?
More often than most routines assume. Skip it when:
- You wore no SPF and no makeup. A rest day at home doesn't need two cleansers. One gentle wash is the better call.
- It's morning. You've been asleep on a clean pillow. A low-pH gel cleanser, or even a plain water rinse, handles the night's sebum fine. Save the oil step for evening.
- Your barrier is already unhappy. Tight, stinging, flaking or newly reactive skin needs less cleansing, not more. Our skin barrier repair guide covers what to do instead.
- Your sunscreen comes off easily. Not all of them need an oil cleanse. Test it: massage your water-based cleanser onto dry skin, rinse, then wipe with a cotton pad. If the pad comes away clean, one step is doing the job.
If your face feels tight in the thirty seconds after you pat it dry, your cleansing routine is too strong for your skin, whichever method you're using. That feeling is barrier disruption, not cleanliness.
Which Products Work Best in Humid Weather?
Texture matters more in humid air than it does anywhere else. A heavy balm that melts beautifully in a dry winter bathroom can feel greasy and refuse to rinse in 85 percent humidity.
On that pH point, it's worth knowing how low your skin actually sits, because the commonly repeated "skin is pH 5.5" line is probably too high. Lambers and colleagues measured the forearm pH of 330 people for a study in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science in 2006. Readings averaged 5.12 while people were washing normally, but after 24 hours of no showering and no products at all, the average fell to 4.93. From that drop the authors estimated the genuinely natural skin surface pH is around 4.7.
Two things follow from that. Your cleanser is nudging your skin's pH upward even when it's a mild one. And bar soap, which typically runs pH 9 to 10, is in a completely different league of disruption. That's the actual reason the acid mantle argument gets made, and it's a better reason than most product copy gives you.
But here's where the obvious conclusion turns out to be wrong, and almost nobody mentions it. You'd assume that if natural skin sits near 4.7, a cleanser at 4.7 must be the gentlest option. Hawkins, Dasgupta and Ananthapadmanabhan looked at exactly this in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science in 2021 and found the opposite can happen. Cleansers built on anionic surfactants, which covers most foaming face washes, can cause more dryness and irritation when they're formulated at skin pH than when they sit at neutral. The reason is electrostatic. At lower pH the stratum corneum carries more charge, so the surfactant binds to your skin proteins more tightly rather than rinsing away.
So "pH balanced" on a label isn't the guarantee it's sold as. What actually matters is the surfactant system, not the number on the bottle. A gentle non-ionic or amphoteric cleanser at pH 6 can easily treat your barrier better than a harsh anionic one at pH 5. Judge a cleanser by how your face feels thirty seconds after rinsing, not by its pH claim.
Patch test anything new on your inner forearm first. And give a new cleanser a couple of weeks before judging it, since the first few days of any routine change tell you very little.
